This guide demonstrates different community set ups and use cases to help choose the best setting to facilitate our self-tour system at your community. We first break down the community style you have, and then use cases that can be used for self-guided tours.
1. Direct Access to Unit (Garden Style)
(For clarity, this refers to a multifamily community that does not have any gated entry to access the units.)
I am a community who wants my renters to be able to view different floorplans or units in a single tour.
Rently Recommendation:
We can use Multi Unit tour type to facilitate however many renters would like tour at the same time. The number of lockboxes corresponds to the amount of concurrent tours you can have at any given time. Lockboxes should be in a common area (anchor) point to easily guide renters to amenities and units/floorplans, or outside the community. The system assumes each lockbox has the access tools to any amenities mentioned and units on self-showing.
- Amount of lockboxes: However many concurrent tours you want
- Location of lockbox: Common area anchor point/outside
- Access tools inside: All units set to self-showing, amenities if mentioned in instructions

I am a community who wants my renters to only see the one floorplan/unit renters scheduled their tour for.
Rently Recommendation:
We can use Single Unit tour type to facilitate one renter seeing one unit at any given time. The number of lockboxes corresponds to the amount of units you will have available for self-tours. Lockboxes will be at the door of the unit.
- Amount of lockboxes: However many units are available for self-tour
- Location of lockbox: At the unit itself
- Access tools inside: Unit the lockbox is assigned to

2. Restricted Access Building Style
(For clarity, this refers to a multifamily community that requires some type of access tool to go inside. This can be a locked gate that requires a key or fob, or an intercom system.)
I am a community who wants to give community and unit access to my renters by way of a key or fob.
Rently Recommendation:
You can use either Single Unit or Multi Unit tour types depending on how you want to utilize the system (do you want renters to view multiple units/floorplans in a single tour?). In either case the lockbox will be outside the community with access tools for the community, amenities (if applicable), and the unit(s) set for self-tour or that the lockbox is assigned to.
Single Unit
- Amount of lockboxes: However many units are available for self-tour
- Location of lockbox: Outside the community
- Access tools inside: Community access key/fob, unit lockbox is assigned to, amenities if mentioned in instructions
Multi Unit
- Amount of lockboxes: However many tours you want concurrently
- Location of lockbox: Outside the community
- Access tools inside: Community Access key/fob, units set to self-showing, amenities if mentioned in instructions

I am a community who wants to give community and unit access to my renters by way of a static intercom code.
Rently Recommendation:
You can use either Single Unit or Multi Unit tour types depending on how you want to use the system (do you want renters to view multiple units/floorplans in a single tour?). The lockbox location will be different based on Single Unit or Multi Unit. The access tools inside the lockbox will be for amenities (if applicable), as well as the unit(s) set for self-tour or that the lockbox is assigned to.
Single Unit
- Amount of lockboxes: However many units are available for self-tour
- Location of lockbox: At the unit itself
- Access tools inside: Unit the lockbox is assigned to, amenities if mentioned in instructions
Multi Unit
(note: we need to mention the static door code in the Community Area Access instructions. This section will also help guide renters to where the lockbox is located inside the community, so that they can get their access tools for their tour.)
- Amount of lockboxes: However many tours you want concurrently
- Location of lockbox: Inside the community near the entrance
- Access tools inside: Any units set to self-showing, amenities if mentioned in instructions
Would you rather prospects gain access via keyless locks installed on the units?
If you'd rather not use lockboxes with keys inside, Rently offers a variety of keyless lock options that are integrated with our self-touring technology. This allows prospects to seamlessly tour, removes the hassle of exchanging keys, acts as an extra resident amenity, and provides the opportunity to upgrade to our full smart home suite.
